XGS/32 News
5/4/2000 @ 10:21am- Here Ye! Here Ye! Get yer source code here!
Lookie here. The XGS/32 source code is available. After much contemplation, I have decided to make the source code for the ill-fated project public.
There are a number of reasons I am doing this. The primary reason is that I simply don't have the time to continue modifications. I now have a wife and 2 kids. I am trying to buy a house, and I am trying to put together another retro hair-metal band. Balance that with a very busy career as a software developer, and my time is simply at a premium. Hell, I dont even have time to play Ultima Online anymore...
However, I would still like to be the focal point of XGS/32 development. I would prefer if a number of developers would continue to make XGS/32 fixes and improvements and submit them to me. I know that sounds a bit arrogant, but it makes sense for 5 developers to work on 1 product than 5 developers to work on 5 products. Am I making sense?
So, now that the source code is released, I would like to coordinate with anyone who decides to take on the challenge of improving XGS/32.
A couple of notes and things to remember:
- I still retain copyright of all XGS/32 specific modifications. In addition, all of Josh Thompson's source code remains under his copyright.
- You can publish, distribute, compile, use and modify the source code to your heart's content.
- You CANNOT sell the source code or claim ownership of any module written by me.
- If you don't understand VC++ 6.0, VB6.0, COM or multi-threading, don't even bother downloading it. Just download the binaries and use it. There is little or nothing to be gained by trying to compile the code yourself.
- There are still a large number of "legacy" bugs in the code. Have fun fixing them.
- There are dependency requirements for the VB client application. Namely, Sheridan 3dPlus controls are required for development.
- DO NOT EMAIL ME WITH QUESTIONS LIKE "how do I compile it". If you don't know how, you shouldn't be trying :)
Good Luck Folks!
